I learn a lot about my own opinions from the people I meet knocking on doors or talking on the phone. Even though I may never talk to someone again, the things they say stick in my mind and remind me that everyone is heroic, we're just each heroic in a different way. The retired law enforcement officer I interviewed last week (Survival and Beyond) was heroic in the way he sacrificed to take care of his mother and did not even seem to notice what he had given up for her. He was heroic in the way he relied on common sense and treating people with respect to get him through lonely worries about his own poor health and mounting medical bills.
Sometimes I wonder if I am the right person for this job. I have no desire to make demands of the government. But I do have a desire to hear other peoples' opinions and the life experiences behind them. And I want to make sure they know their opinions and life stories give me something to think about.

It looks like I might be ready to launch this blog tonight at 9.
So far I am writing posts, which appear just under the header on the home page, in Spanish and then converting them to English. The hardest part is writing in Spanish, kind of like a right handed person trying to draw a map and directions to their house with their left hand. It's really hard but I am enjoying getting back into Spanish after not working on it for several years.
We (Erwin and I) can't canvass (Erwin is Power Up's full time organizer. He was hired just before I was) so we're concentrating on staying in touch with the people we've already met, getting to know them better, and giving them a chance to learn more about us. I was planning on starting a blog anyway, so the Covid restrictions just make it feel even more like a good idea.
Erwin and our director Khalilah are working hard with several other groups on a list of demands going forward related to the changes brought on by the pandemic. I think the campaign is called Beyond Survival. I will be sure to post more about in my notes next Sunday. Which brings me to my blog scheduling plans.
Posts will come out every Sunday night at 9pm. They will be stories about my work canvassing for Power Up, or life among my mostly immigrant neighbors, which is what got me involved in Power Up from the start.
My greatest hope is that people will either participate in the comment section under every post, share their stories with my by phone if they are too shy to 'talk' online, or maybe even get inspired to start their own blog!
Are you ready to be inspired?! Can you feel the hope that comes from surviving difficult times and realizing just how strong you really are? Are you ready to share you ideas about how a just society should distribute its resources? To ponder together how we can treat each other as citizens of the same planet?
We want to hear from you!
